I have been itching for a fresh Everdark Sovereign ever since FromSoftware turned old Everdarks into a round-robin in Elden Ring Nightreign. Gaping Jaw, Sentient Pest, Darkdrift Knight—I fought them until my crew could call every attack before it happened. That is not mastery; that is boredom wearing a crown. So when a new batch of Nightlords got the Everdark treatment, it was music to my ears. Then I learned Augur was first up. Honestly, though, Augur is the weakest Nightlord in the base fight. It floats around like a haunted parade balloon and occasionally poops out an atomic bomb. I still went in with hope. Foolish? Maybe. Hopeful? Absolutely.

The Everdark version is better. Not by much. You start against plain Augur, which is easy enough, and after you win, a drop appears with a vamped-up starter weapon and a nifty ability: Storm Ruler. Here is the catch—the game does not exactly spell out that this is the key. I threw a few ults into Augur's face and thought, 'Huh. That should have hurt more.' Then I took a second look at the new toy. I used Storm Ruler, and a big chunk of health vanished. Just like that. My teammates, bless them, did not have the same revelation.

If the whole squad spams Storm Ruler, I am sure Everdark Augur melts fast. I did not have that squad. It was like pulling teeth. Every so often I desperately spammed the Hello prattling pate and then performed the move, hoping my teammates would connect the dots. They did not. I watched them fire volleys of arrows into Augur's chest to absolutely no effect. They never stopped trying, so good on them—but oh, it was painful.

What makes this fight worse is that Everdark Augur will not kill you if you cannot figure out the trick. It keeps you alive just so you can watch it prance from one side of the map to the other and drop little bombs you cannot destroy. It is the kind of move I would expect from Libra, honestly. The fight becomes the longest, most painstakingly boring boss encounter I have had in Nightreign. You are not in danger so much as you are trapped in a floating seminar about patience.

I do appreciate that FromSoftware is still using Nightreign as a lab. Not every idea lands, but the experiment is cool. The downside is that every other weapon you gather on the way to the fight becomes useless. My advice: invest in effects, especially walking effects or anything lightning-related, because that is Everdark Augur's weakness. Do not ignore Storm Ruler. Do not assume your usual build will carry you. And please, for the love of runes, tell your teammates.

What I expected What I got
A scary new Everdark twist A slightly better Augur with one big gimmick
A clear weapon upgrade Storm Ruler, barely signposted
A team fight A communication test with floating bombs
A quick rematch The longest waiting room in Nightreign

Quick tips if you are heading in:

  • Grab and test Storm Ruler immediately. 🗡️

  • Stack lightning and walking effects. ⚡

  • Use emotes or voice chat to point allies toward the trick. 💬

  • Do not rely on your normal weapon pile. 🚫

Looking back from 2026, after the Everdark Sovereign version of Augur first woke up on July 31, 2025, I still think it is a step up from the regular fight, but only a step. It made me lose faith in humanity for a split second as my teammates shot arrows into a brick wall of a boss, but they kept trying. That counts for something. I just hope the next Everdark Sovereign learns the right lesson: surprise is good, mystery is fine, but a boss that turns into a waiting room needs a little more thunder.
